Red bow tattoo on a hip
Other · Colour · Photo
A solid red bow with dark outline sits on the upper hip or buttock of a person whose face is not shown. The bow is filled with flat red ink and has simple shading, and it stands out against the skin tone. The shorts behind it carry a repeated white, red and blue cartoon cat print, and the warm, close framing leaves the bow as the clear focal point.

Dear Ruth,

You will think me soft for writing this, but the red ribbon is still on the gate at Holloway Lane, the one you tied there the week before you left. Mr Pardoe wanted it down for the sheep. I told him it stays until you come back to take it off yourself. He grumbled, but he has left it alone, which is more than I expected from him.
The wood has been strange since the frost. Every morning the path past the mill pond is marked with small scraps of cloth, white and red, tied to the hazels by somebody I never see. Tom Ashby swears it is the Coombe children playing at something. Mrs Hale says it is the woodcutter's wife, who has not spoken since her boy went through the ice. I walked it on Sunday with the dog and counted forty-one before I gave up, and every one was tied in a neat double loop, the way your mother taught us for Sunday school.
I have not told anyone that I went back on Monday and found the last one tied on the old stile, fresh enough that the red had not faded. I left it where it was. Somebody is keeping the way open for someone, and I would rather not be the one to close it.
Come home when the thaw is through. Bring the good scissors. The gate can finally come down.
Love, Margaret
