Red classic car with flowers on an arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A red classic car with teal windows and black tyres is the central subject, drawn in bold black outlines with flat colour fills. Orange and purple flowers, blue scalloped swirls and small star shapes surround the car on a pale background. The design fills most of the frame, with the car angled across the arm and bright colour dominating the composition.

The Chevrolet came off the Tuesday ferry with its tyres still crusted in sea salt, and Morag Beag stood on the slipway with her arms folded and told the driver he had the wrong island. Nobody on Sgeir Ruadh owned anything the colour of a post box. The cars here were grey Fiestas and tractors that had given up on paint decades ago.

The driver, Dougie Sim from Oban, showed her the pencilled note tucked under the sun visor. Ruaridh Gillies had kept the car in a shed in Oban for thirty years and wanted it driven to the north bay, where the water turns blue in the afternoons, and left facing the sea. Morag read the note twice. Ruaridh had courted her sister at a dance in 1961, and he had never once in her hearing admitted to owning anything so vain as a red car.
They pushed the Chevrolet along the machair with the orange flowers brushing its wheel arches and the purple thrift nodding at its bumper. Dougie steered with one hand and waved at every sheep. At the top of the bay, the sea came in under the sky in long blue scallops, each one breaking white along the sand as if someone had stitched the shoreline by hand.
Dougie left the engine running out of habit. Morag climbed into the passenger seat, saw a tin of Murray Mints and a folded map with the island's names in her sister's handwriting, and laughed out loud for the first time since the funeral. Then she reached across and pressed the horn, once, and the sound went out over the water bright as a small star.
