Colour realism tattoo of a LEGO Iron Man minifigure in red and gold against orange flames, on the calf.

LEGO Iron Man minifigure on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A LEGO-style Iron Man minifigure in red and gold armour stands in front of a soft orange and yellow flame background with pale blue streaks. The minifigure's blocky plastic form is rendered with smooth shading, highlights and cast shadows to give it a three-dimensional look. The composition is centred on the leg, with the figure filling most of the frame against a dark backdrop.

Dad always said the Waltzer had a temper and the generator had two, so when the fair pulled onto Hollin Meadow that October I kept my hands clear of anything with a switch. What I did have was a biscuit tin of loose bricks my nan had rescued from a church jumble sale, and a red and gold man with a face like a closed visor, who came to me with no legs worth mentioning.

Ferdie Lusk ran the rifle gallery and had a soft spot for kids who sat on his step with their chins in their hands. He bet me a quid I couldn't build the figure a proper pair of legs and a chest plate before the lamps came on. I had nine minutes and a lot of orange bricks that were really from a cracked bucket of Dad's old decorating tools, which I'm still not sure was allowed. I pressed the studs down with my thumbs until they clicked, and the gold pieces I borrowed from a dead tractor kit caught the light from the first lamps in a way I thought was a bit showy.

When the generator coughed and the whole Waltzer went dark, the figure slid off my knee into the grass. I picked him up and he was warm from my hands. Ferdie didn't say anything about the quid. He just tipped his cap and went back to his tin cans.

I put the figure on the caravan step that night, facing the bonfire the fair men had lit at the edge of the field. The flames threw his shadow long across the wet grass, and for a minute he looked like he was walking out of the fire rather than into it.
