Purple faceted heart on an arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A faceted heart shape is tattooed on the outer arm, built from black linework that divides it into triangular planes. The panels are filled with purple, lilac and pink washes that fade and blend unevenly, giving a soft, cosmic look. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin with a blurred background.

The inspector at the Saltmarsh crossing tips the velvet pouch onto her steel tray, and the stone rolls out heart first, catching the strip light. You cut it three winters ago in the back room above your uncle's watch repair, working the amethyst by lamp until your eyes ached, each facet a flat plane you could feel with a thumbnail before you could see it.

She holds it up. Inside the purple, the pink clouds drift the way they do when you turn it slowly, and she frowns as if the stone has done something rude. "Anything to declare?" You say it is a heart, which is true, and a diamond, which is not, and a small piece of the night sky you could never afford to keep at home. She laughs at that, though she does not put it down.
While she works through the duty sheet you think about the lines, the black ones you drew before any wash went on, how they divide the heart into panels so the light has somewhere to go. Every plane holds one colour and lets the next bleed in at its edge. Nothing in it is solid. It is only arranged.
She stamps the form, slides the stone back into its pouch and pushes it across the steel. "Go on, then." Outside, the wind comes off the estuary with salt in it, and you close your hand around the warm weight of the thing, which has turned, in the lamplight, into a small dark sky with a heart at its centre.
