Red fairy tattoo on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small winged fairy figure in red ink sits on the wrist, shown in a loose, painted silhouette with the body in solid red. Fine red splatter spreads around the figure and fades out towards the edges. The ink is the only colour in the frame, set against a dark dotted mesh fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stationmaster at Coldharbour Junction kept a red paint pot in the signal box, for touching up the lamp posts, and every autumn a small winged thing came down the embankment to borrow it. Nobody saw her arrive. There was only the smudge of colour on the lever handles in the morning, and a fine spray of it across the platform like a dropped handful of rowan berries.

One November the 4:10 was late and the fog lay thick along the rails. Tom Pardew, who had the night shift, found her sitting on the rim of the paint pot with her wings folded tight, shaking. Her dress was the colour of wet brick. She told him the old line had been shut since the war and the trains that still came through were running on the wrong tracks, and that the only thing to guide them home was a bright enough mark on the sleepers.

He gave her the brush. She painted a path of red dots down the length of the platform while he held the lamp, and she did not stop until her wings had gone pale and thin as tissue. The 4:10 came through the fog on the proper rails, slow and sure, its driver never once looking down at the ground where a small figure stood with paint to her elbows, lifting one hand as the carriages passed.

The next morning the stationmaster found the pot full again, and on the bench a single fallen wing dyed the colour of a signal.
