Swallow and rose on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A swallow in flight is filled with a large red rose, with its wings and tail in black and dark grey areas between the petals. The rose has layered red and pink tones with soft shading, while the swallow's head and chest are rendered in green with a small dark eye. The tattoo sits on the outer forearm against a plain grey background and a dark top and jeans at the edge of the frame.

By the time you reached Kessel Gap the snow had already swallowed the lower path, and Mara was waiting by the cairn with the mule's halter looped over one wrist. She did not ask what was in the oilcloth parcel buttoned inside your coat. She asked whether the swallows had come over yet, because in her village that was how you knew the pass was open.

You had seen them that morning, a dark forked stitch working low above the scree, and then a flash of red as one turned in the light. Mara laughed when you told her. Her grandmother, she said, had called swallows the rose thieves, since they dived so hard into the walled gardens of the lowland that petals came loose and blew up the valley after them. Nobody in the high villages grew roses. The old woman had kept one anyway, in a clay pot on the sill, and it had died the winter Mara turned twelve.
The parcel held a rose too, pressed flat between two sheets of card and wrapped in blue paper, sent up by Mara's brother from the city where he had gone to work the rail yards. He had written only three lines on the card. Mara read them standing in the wind, folded the card into her sleeve without a word, and took the mule's rope from your hand.
Halfway up the gap the swallow came back. It skimmed the drifts beside you, black wings cut sharp against the grey sky, a rose blooming across its breast as though someone had painted the bird around it. Mara stopped to watch it pass between the two black rocks. 'Keep walking,' she said softly. 'It always knows the way through before we do.'
