Small bird and heart on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small bird in flight is drawn in thin black linework, carrying a dandelion-like seed head in its beak or claws. A tiny red heart sits above the bird's wing, and the only colour in the design is this heart. The tattoo is shown in close view on the side of an ankle against plain, softly lit skin with light fabric at the top left.

Dearest Nell,

The wind has finally dropped on the Hollin Pass, so I can write without the ink skating across the page. Father says the thaw came early this year and the becks are running fat with it. I have been up at the sheepfold most mornings, counting ewes with my breath freezing on my collar, and the small brown bird that nests under the eaves has been bringing me its little troubles like a lodger paying rent.

Last Tuesday it came down to the wall beside me with a dandelion clock caught in its beak, the seeds all fluffed and ready to blow. I thought it was mad. There is nothing growing up here but moss and sorrel. Then I saw where it had found the thing, a crack in the flagstones by the gate, a single yellow head gone to silver. It perched, looked at me sideways the way you used to when you wanted a biscuit, and then it was off over the drop, straight out across the gully where the wind takes everything that isn't tied down.

I went after it, of course, and nearly broke my neck on the scree. I did not find the bird. I found a small red heart of wool that Mrs Ashworth must have dropped from her basket on Sunday, snagged on a thorn bush, and I sat there laughing like a fool with the seeds drifting past my boots.

Come up at midsummer. Bring the good scissors. I want to show you where the seeds landed, because I swear some of them have already taken root in that crack by the gate.

Your loving sister, Bess
