Red floral ornament tattoo on wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A raised hand with the palm facing the camera shows a red ornamental tattoo of flowers and swirling filigree wrapping around the inner wrist. The linework is fine and the motifs are symmetrical, with the design sitting in a single solid red tone. The hand fills the centre of the frame against a softly blurred background of green leaves, and a teal and grey ring sits on the middle finger.

The village hall still smells of floor polish and the tea urn, and nobody has taken down the honours board that lists the netball captains. You stand by the squash table with a paper cup of warm orange and watch Denise Pollard try to remember your surname. She gets it wrong, then right, then laughs as if she had planned the mistake.

It is Denise who brings up the sampler. Thirty-one years ago, Mrs Haddow set your class one task for the autumn term: stitch a repeating rosehip motif in red thread, symmetrical as a mirror, no pencil marks allowed on the linen. You finished yours in a week and spent the rest of the term watching Denise unpick hers. Now she lifts it from a freezer bag, the red faded to the colour of brick dust, and holds it up between two fingers like evidence.
You expected it to look childish. It doesn't. Every petal sits exactly opposite its twin, and the curled stems run into one another without a knot showing anywhere. Denise says her mother kept it in a biscuit tin for three decades and that she only found it again when they cleared the house. "You always did the hard bits without looking," she says. "I never worked out how."
You take the linen from her and fold it along the centre line, then again, and the eight petals meet in the middle like a shut fan. Across the hall someone calls for the raffle, and you tuck the small square into your coat pocket, where it stays warm for the rest of the night.
