Red flower and chilli tattoo on a foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A three-panel collage shows a colour tattoo across the top of a foot, with a large red flower with yellow centre, pink buds, green leaves and a cluster of red chilli peppers. The bold black outlines and flat fills are typical of traditional work, with small grey dots adding a delicate accent. Pink toenail polish is visible on the toes against a pale background.

Dear Nell,

The chilli plants came up at last, three of them in the lee of the broken north wall where the sun lies longest. Mr Abernethy said they would never take in this cold county, and I did not argue, since I had only the seed you sent me in that tin with the faded hunting scene on the lid. Yesterday the first pods turned from green to a red so hard and glossy I thought someone had painted them, and I stood there with my hands in my apron like a girl at a fair.

The castle has been roofless since my grandfather's time, so the kitchen garden is the only room still kept. Everything in it has learned to make do. The roses have climbed the arch and the pinks have seeded themselves into the gravel, and by the sundial there is a clump of old lilies gone wild, red as a schoolmaster's pen. Mrs Pryor thinks I am wasting good ground on peppers. Last Sunday she sent the boy round with a basket of her own sorrel and asked, quite sharply, whether I meant to feed the lord's guests or set them on fire.

I have strung the first pods to dry on a length of twine across the scullery window, one bunch hanging beside the next, and the light comes through them so they glow like lanterns against the dark stone. I think the house will keep them now. There are only two of us left to take dinner in the hall, and I find I want something on the table that burns a little.

Your loving sister, Margaret
