Red rose tattoo on the top of a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show the same foot with a large red rose and a smaller rose behind it, surrounded by green leaves and two yellow buds. The petals are shaded in red with lighter highlights, and bold black outlines define the shapes. The left image is a closer, more top-down view, while the right shows the foot at a slight angle against a white background.

Sit down, the lot of you. The milk train's late again, so you may as well hear this properly. Ada Pringle kept the flower bed on the up platform at Hollin Cross for forty-one years, and in all that time she grew one rose she would not sell.

It was a deep red, with a second bloom crowding in behind it like a shy sister, and leaves as dark as wet slate. The goods yard men offered her shillings for a cutting. The stationmaster offered her Sunday dinner at his table. Ada only shook her head and said the rose was for whoever stepped off a train with nobody waiting on the platform for them.
One February, the last train of the night let out a young man with a battered case and no proper coat. He stood at the end of the platform looking at the bed as if it were a letter he could not open. Ada went out in her cardigan, snipped the best bloom with her kitchen scissors, and pressed it into his hand without asking his name. He pinned it to his lapel and walked off into the sleet towards the village.
The next spring that bush put out two flowers where there had been one, and a yellow bud she had never planted. Ada swore the rose knew where it was needed, and I have never once argued with her. Mind your feet on the step. Here's the eight-fifteen now.
