Red flower and geometric sleeve seen from behind

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A person is photographed from behind against a white brick wall, wearing a black T-shirt printed with the words I OWE YOU NOTHING and black leggings. Tattoos cover the right upper arm and forearm, with a red flower above a dense geometric pattern, while the left arm carries greyscale ornamental work and the neck shows dark detailing. The shading and linework are hard to resolve in detail, but the image is clear enough to show the colour split of mostly black and grey ink with red on the flower.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now, the night shift at the old infirmary on the hill was a long one, and the floor of the east corridor was the first thing a new porter was shown, because it was laid in circles inside circles, six petals to each ring, and a man who could walk it without counting was a man who could be trusted with the lift keys. Tom Harrow laid that floor the year the river came up over the car park. He had one tin of red glaze left from the chapel tiles, and he kept it back, the way a cook keeps back the last of the good butter. Nobody asked him what it was for. He only said a flower wants somewhere to open.

Years later a night nurse called Bridie Coyle stood at the end of that corridor at three in the morning, watching the lamp in room nine, and felt a tile shift under her shoe. Beneath it was a crumb of old lime, and beneath that a scrap of card in pencil, the hand gone thin and careful: Lay me where the lights go out last. She knelt, pressed the tile back into its ring, and found the glaze was warm under her palm, as if someone had been holding it all night.

The porters will tell you the east corridor has never been colder since, and that the lift runs faster past room nine. Ask them what the flower opened into and they will look at their boots and say the same thing every time. Keep your count, mind the rings, and the circles will carry you home.
