Geometric moon and symbols on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is shown from the side against a plain pale background, with the wearer in a grey t-shirt. The tattoo combines a thin crescent arc and a dashed vertical line with a solid black disc containing fine white geometric linework resembling a faceted pattern, plus a row of small symbols and a single dot. The work is entirely black ink on pale skin, with clean lines and a simple, uncluttered composition.

Mind the shutter, Harriet, the wind has its fingers under it again. Pour the last of the cider and sit where the fire can see your face, because this is the one about the moon that fell into the mill pond the winter the river froze. Everyone in the valley knows the crescent is only what remained after the ice took its share. The rest sank.

Ada Corrigan went down to the pond with a lantern and a length of dashed twine, because her father had told her that anything lost under ice can be measured if you count the cracks. She counted forty-one before the lantern guttered. On each crack she tied a knot, and beside each knot she scratched a mark into a bone tally stick, the same marks the carters use for barrels of salt. Wind, water, weight, and the thin sign for a debt paid. She did not yet know the marks were a sum.
Dawn came up grey over the pass, and the pond was a black eye of open water. Where the moon should have been, she found a lattice of frost-lines, faceted like a lantern shade, every point lit from behind. She lifted it out in both hands. It was heavier than she expected, and cold enough to burn.
So she carried it up to the inn and hung it over the door, and that is why the moon has no face in this valley, only a net. Now finish that cider, Harriet. Count the cracks in the ceiling with me. If you reach forty-one, you may go to bed.
