Red flower knee bands with a panther
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two knees are shown side by side, each with a band of red flowers with black outlines and dark green leaves. The left leg also has a black and grey panther, partly visible on the calf, with a dark shaded outline. The bold black linework and flat red and green fills are typical of traditional tattooing, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the skin.

The panther had been asleep under the lettuce racks since before the ship had a name, and nobody on Deck Nine had thought to wake it. On your third shift you find it curled between two grow-lamps, one ear notched from a fight no one remembers, its tail hanging over the edge of a drip tray. Mother Ilse, who keeps the rose beds, tells you the cat is the garden's real warden and you are only the one who does the paperwork. She points at the bands you were given at induction, the red blooms with their dark leaves, and says the cat will follow anyone who wears the mark properly and bite anyone who doesn't.

The rule is simple: a warden waters the roses before the lamps brighten and never cuts a bloom without the cat's leave. You learn to read its moods from the flick of its shoulders. On the ninth morning the beds go grey along one edge, a blight creeping in from the pump room, and the panther stops at the threshold and will not go further. You kneel in the wet soil, the bands stiff with damp, and understand that the cat has been waiting for you to notice what it already knew.
You trace the blight to a cracked seal in the pump room and spend two days with a borrowed torch and a roll of tape. When the water runs clean again the red blooms open one after another along the whole length of the beds. Ilse says nothing. She cuts a single rose, sets it in a glass on the mess table, and tells you the cat has taken a liking to your footsteps.
That evening you walk the long corridor back to your bunk. The panther pads a few steps behind, leaving faint prints in the dust of the deck plates, and every time you look round it is watching you with those amber eyes, as if the garden has finally decided who it belongs to.
