Red geometric emblem on a wrist
Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical emblem built from angular, blocky strokes, with a diamond shape above a central interlocking motif and a long pointed form descending below. The lines are solid and fairly uniform, and the design shades from bright red at the top to near black at the bottom. It is photographed straight on against pale skin, with the design filling most of the frame.

Ada wants the stencil cut by Thursday, before the ground at Haverhill turns to mud and the wagons start rolling. You sit on the tailboard of the caravan with the card spread across your knees, tracing the crest she drew forty years ago in a hand that shakes now. Diamond at the top, a knot of interlocking bars in the middle, and that long point falling away below like a sword dropped in a ditch. She says the red was ground from iron ochre her father dug out of a Lincolnshire quarry, and the black at the tip is whatever soot was left in the pot when the fire went out.

The blade of your craft knife drags at the top corner and the card curls under it. Ada watches over her tea and says nothing, which is how she corrects people. Twice you start again, and twice she lets you. By the third pass the bars sit clean and the knot in the centre holds together without a single bridge left to tear.
On the last night the lights on the Ferris wheel go out one bulb at a time. You hold the finished stencil flat against the canvas while Ada dabs the sponge through the holes, red at the top, lighter and lighter as she works down, until she switches to the black and the point lands on the seam at the bottom of the banner, exactly where the fold will hide it from the road.
When the banner unrolls in the next town, nobody will see the join. They will only see the blade pointing down into the dark, and you will be the only one who knows exactly where the black begins.
