Trident and folk pattern on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A solid black trident emblem sits at the top of the forearm, with bold, clean outlines and flat black fill. Below it, three diamond-shaped panels in red and black form a cross-stitch style folk pattern, with blocky pixel-like motifs and a central red flower. The mixed palette of black and red is set against plain skin on a neutral background.

Sister Oksana would not let me count the squares on graph paper. The pattern lived in the wrists, she said, and I could count when I had earned the right. So for three winters I stitched the same diamond onto scraps of linen in the cold scriptorium while the bells at the lower lavra rang the hours through the snow.

The red was the hard part. Our dyer boiled madder root in a copper pot by the north wall, and the thread came out the colour of a cut lip, never quite the same twice. Black was simpler: soot, vinegar and patience. Oksana told me each diamond was a field, and the little crosses inside it were the seed heads a farmer's wife counted at harvest so no grain went unaccounted for.
When the abbot's nephew came back from the city with a stencil of the trident, black as a gate bar, he asked us to set it above the patterns on the altar cloth. Oksana held the stencil to the window for a long time before she said yes. Then she made me outline it in one pull of thread, without stopping, so the edge would be honest.
When the cloth was finished, the trident stood over the field like a lamp over a table, and one flower in the lowest diamond had a stitch wrong on purpose. Oksana said nothing is finished until someone has been allowed to make a mistake in it. I left the error where it was, and I have never found a better place to keep it.
