Red-haired girl on a blue wave on an arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a red-haired girl in a pink dress, mid-motion and smiling, carried on a rolling blue wave. Bold outlines and smooth colour fills define the figures, with layered blue tones for the water and wave forms wrapping around the arm. Blue dominates the composition, with red hair and pink accents, and the design fills the upper arm against a patterned red dress and a bright background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tam, the grey whale came back to the bay this morning with her calf tucked under one fin like a loaf under an arm, and I was down at the slip with the bucket when the swell rose up flat and blue as a slate roof. Brannagh Ferrier was out on it, standing up, her hair going everywhere like a fire somebody had let loose on the water. Nobody taught that girl to ride a wave. She just does it, the way her mother once did before the cold got into her knees.

She came sliding in on the crest with her skirt full of foam, laughing at me as if I were the one who had been caught out. She handed me back the bucket, which was full of mackerel I had not put in it, and asked whether the boats had gone past the skerry yet. I said not since Tuesday. She said her father was not drowned, only mislaid out beyond the rocks, and that the wave would take her there if she asked it nicely. I told her to mind the tide. She said the tide was the only thing out there that never lied to anyone.

I did not believe a word of it until the water went smooth and the whale lifted her great head and looked at me with one eye, the way you look at a neighbour who has finally come to borrow something. Brannagh stepped onto the swell as easily as onto a kitchen step, and the blue rose under her feet like a hand. Then the gulls came screaming down after them both, shouting like they had been paid.

Come home before the equinox, Tam, or you will miss the sight of her going. Bring your boots. The slip is slick and I am too old to fish you out.
