Snow White portrait with woodland animals

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised face of Snow White with closed eyes, red lips and a black hair bow, surrounded by woodland animals including a rabbit, a bird and a deer. Bold black outlines define the forms, with flat blocks of yellow, blue, red and green and swirling yellow scrollwork filling the background. The design fills most of the frame on a limb, with the skin tone visible around the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pryce had pinned the pantomime costumes along the boarding house banisters since Easter, and by the second week of August the hallway smelled of felt and boiled sweets. Dolly Kemp, the only lodger who could thread a needle without swearing, sat on the bottom stair with a cup of stewed tea and a basket of paper flowers, waiting for the rain to ease off the harbour.

The fairy queen had a crown of tinfoil. The rabbit had been cut from an old brown coat that belonged to a man who never came back for it. Dolly painted its ears yellow because yellow was all the tin had left, and Mrs Pryce said a rabbit in a fairy tale could be any colour it liked as long as it kept still for the photograph.

On the last evening, the girl who was to play the sleeping princess came down in her stage dress, a red bow pinned into her hair, and refused to close her eyes. She said the seven hill men were in the back room drinking gin from teacups, and that the deer had been left out in the wet. Dolly went out with a torch and found it folded under the hedge, its blue felt swollen, its painted swirls running into the gravel like watercolour.

She carried it back under her coat and sat up until the small hours with a needle and a jar of thread. When the sun came over the water the girl stood at the top of the stairs with her eyes shut, the deer's soft new face held against her shoulder, and waited to be carried down into the light.
