Mind the step on the landing, the lift has been stuck since Tuesday, so you'll climb with me and listen. Fourteen floors, and the whole of Ashgrove Tower leaning on its railings to hear. There were two boys in the flats across the car park, Desmond and Teodor, and their windows were so close that they could pass a biscuit tin between them on a broom handle. Desmond kept a snail in a jam jar with a shell curled tight as a fist, and Teodor counted raindrops on the bus shelter glass, dot after dot, until the bus came.

Then Teodor's mother took a job in Leeds, and the removal van came on a grey Saturday with the radio playing football. Desmond stood at his window and watched the van go round the roundabout twice before it found the road. For a year the letters came, thin blue envelopes with Teodor's careful capitals, and each one had a little row of dots at the bottom where the pen had rested. Desmond drew a heart on the back of a bin-day notice and gave it to him in the next one. One half he spiralled like the snail's shell, and the other half he dotted like the rain, and he ran both halves down to a point at the bottom.

He left a gap where the two sides should have met. He said a gap was honest, because you cannot hold a person in a line, but you can leave the door open for the rain and the snail to go between. Teodor framed it, the story goes, above a kitchen sink in a house with a garden. So when you reach the bottom of these stairs, and the lift is still broken, look for the gap in the heart. That is where they keep talking.
