Red heart with uterus outline

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A solid red heart with a thin black outline sits centrally on the skin. Inside it, a uterus and fallopian tubes are drawn in pale outline with a dark inner line, leaving the skin tone showing through the shapes. The bold flat red fill and simple, even linework give a clean, graphic look against the plain skin.

Dear Thaleia,

The kiln cracked the first batch again, so I have been working through the nights with the lamp pulled close. You asked why the priestess wants her clay offerings painted at all, when plain terracotta has always done. I told her the same thing Mother told me: the goddess sees red first. So I mix the ochre with a little blood-coloured earth from the riverbank and paint each heart until it glows like a coal.

Inside each one I press the little shape the women bring me, the womb with its two curled horns reaching out like a pair of arms. Mostly I work from their drawings in the dust, not from any body, and I keep my eyes on the clay. Yesterday Kallirhoe came with her daughter, who had sat on the cool steps all morning and would not speak. She traced the horns with one finger and said, "So it can find its way back," then laughed at herself for saying it.

I did not correct her. I simply scored a finer line along the tubes, so the shape would hold in the fire, and set the heart on the shelf to dry beside the others.

Write again before the caravan leaves. Tell Eumenes the sow in the lower field has finally farrowed.
