Heart outline with Proverbs 31:25 script
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A single continuous black line forms a heart outline, with the script text Proverbs 31:25 written along its left side and the line looping at the bottom. A thin red stripe fills part of the upper right curve of the heart. The tattoo sits on smooth skin at the side of the torso, with dark clothing visible at the top edge of the frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the cactus. You want to hear about the wire woman of Carrow Flats, or you'd rather sit there looking at the sky? Good. Then listen.

Her name was Nell Ambrose, and she bent fencing wire for the mining company that paid its men in tins of peaches. She never lifted her eyes from the work. Every bend had to be made in a single pass, the wire never lifted and never doubled back, or the line would kink and the fence would sag by morning. The foreman swore it could not be done. Nell said it was the only way she knew how.
One October a dust storm rolled off the ridge and stripped the paint from the water tower. It took the chapel roof and the bell rope with it. Nell found the bell lying in a wash of sand the next morning, and she sat beside it until the sun was on her shoulders, turning a length of copper over in her hands.
She bent that copper in one unbroken curve, a loop that folded back on itself and closed at the bottom like a knot pulled tight. When the foreman saw it he laughed and said it looked like a valentine drawn by a drunk. Nell said nothing. She hung it on the bell rope as a counterweight, and the bell rang true for the first time in years. Folks say that when the wind comes off the ridge now, you can still hear the copper humming, one long note that never breaks. Most of the flats have gone quiet since the mine closed. But if you stand by the old tower at dusk, when the red runs across the sand like a stripe of paint, you will hear her still bending, still making the line go on.
