Mandala elephant head on lower back

Back · Colour · Photo

A small elephant head is outlined in deep red ink, with its forehead, trunk and ear filled by a red mandala-like pattern. Teal and red details sit within the shapes, and the design is set against smooth skin at the lower back. The linework is solid and the composition is centred on the tattoo, with a dark brown fabric filling the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Gerald on Bay Four had been asking for his elephant since midnight, and nobody on the night shift could work out what he meant until Noor found the drawing folded inside his cardigan pocket. It was a small biro sketch on the back of a discharge leaflet: an elephant head in profile, its trunk curled up like a question mark, and someone had filled its brow with rings and loops, the kind of patient pattern you draw when you have nothing but time.

I took it from her at the nurses' station and turned it over. The loops did not stop at the edges of the head. They ran across the ear and down into the trunk in red ink, and where the pen had run dry, someone had switched to the teal felt tips from the play trolley and carried on regardless. Noor said the old man had been drawing it all week on the back of every form he was given, and always the same elephant, never finished.

At four the corridor lights dropped to their night setting, and I sat with him while the monitors ticked over. He wanted me to trace the trunk with my finger, round and round the spiral, the way you'd smooth a sheet. I did. His breathing slowed to match it, and by five he was asleep with the leaflet resting on his chest.

When the day staff came on at seven, Gerald was awake and insisting the elephant had walked off the page to find his wife at the seaside. Nobody could say where he'd heard that. I checked the leaflet once more before handing it back. The trunk was still curled, but beside its tip sat a single new teal dot, freshly made, where there had been nothing at all before.
