The snow has been falling since the afternoon, and the lamp over the yard gate has vanished into it twice already. You are the one who goes out with the shovel, because your mother's knees will not take the drifts and your brother has gone down the valley road for the doctor. Nobody else is under the roof of the Hollin Inn tonight except the stranger in room four, who paid in silver and has not come down since.

You find him in the kitchen before you find anything else. He sits with his head bowed over the hearth, both arms folded round a clay bowl of cold porridge he has not touched, as though it were the last warm thing in the county. You set the kettle on the coals and say nothing. After a while he tells you the bowl was his grandmother's, and that she used to hold it exactly so in bad winters, one arm curled round it and her chin dipped low, keeping the heat in with her own body.

You scrape the porridge out, fill the bowl with broth from the pot, and set it in his hands. He does not thank you. He only tilts his head so the steam rises past his face, and you notice he is not weeping, only listening to the house creak under the weight of the snow.

In the morning the sky is hard and blue. The stranger has gone, and the bowl sits on the windowsill with a thin white ring of frost where the broth has dried, and a single crumb of bread left at its rim for the sparrows.
