Red lotus flower tattoo on back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A large lotus flower with layered red and orange petals and a yellow-orange centre sits at the centre of the back. Bold black outlines define the petals, and soft shading within each petal gives a sense of depth, while fine black linework forms a chain with small hanging charms beneath the flower. The flower fills most of the frame against a grey clothing edge, with a necklace chain visible at the top.

Dear Tom, It is gone four and the ward has settled into the thin, humming quiet that only comes before the breakfast trolleys. Bed nine has rung for water three times, and I have stopped being cross about it, because the man in it only wants someone to sit with him while he talks about the allotment. I sat. We agreed the leeks will bolt this year whatever anyone does.

Do you remember Nan's pond at the bottom of the garden in Hebden? She kept a lotus in a bucket of mud every summer, which was daft in Yorkshire, and it never once bloomed. Last week I finally saw one on the hospital grounds, in the little pond behind the chapel, where someone has bothered to plant it properly. Each morning the petals lift out of brown water, red at the edges and pale gold at the heart, and by the afternoon they fold shut again. The porters say the gardeners hang a row of brass charms along the railing each spring, little bells that chime when the wind comes off the car park.

I read on a leaflet in the staff room that lotus seeds can lie in mud for centuries and still open once the water warms. I thought about that at the end of my last run, when the lift doors closed on a family who had waited all night, and all I had to give them was that the morning was coming. Nan would have said the same thing, only with more swearing.

I am going out to the pond at six, before the day staff come on. Bring a flask when you visit on Sunday, and I will show you which bud is ready.
