Red poppy on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A single red poppy with dark centre shading sits on the outer calf, with a thin black line forming its stem. The petals use soft, painterly red tones with subtle darker shading, and the design is set against plain skin with the wearer standing in black leather boots.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The slag heap had been seeding itself all spring, and by the first week of June the poppies had worked their way into every crack between the cinders. Nell Hartley stood at the bottom of it with her father's bread tin under one arm and watched the wind lift the red petals and set them down again. The hooter had gone at six. Her brother was still under, and the men at the top gate had stopped passing cigarettes around.

She climbed carefully, because the cinders slid, and picked the one flower that stood apart from the rest, a bloom the colour of a pillar box with a dark smudge at its heart like a thumbprint on a window. Its stem was so thin she could see the grey of the ash through it when she held it to the light. She had expected it to snap. It bent, then held, and that surprised her more than anything else that day.

At the lamp room, a clerk she had known since school told her there was no news yet. She said she knew, she only wanted to leave something. He found her a jam jar on a shelf behind the desk, its label soaked off in patches, and filled it from the tap. She stood the poppy in the water beside the window, where the light came in sideways over the washing sheds.

By teatime the petals had dropped in a red ring on the sill, and she thought that was the end of it. But the stem stayed upright, black and wiry as a hair. When the lamps came up the lane at nine, she was already at the door, and she did not look at the jar again until her brother was standing in the kitchen, coughing and laughing, with dust in his eyebrows.
