Red polka dot bow on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A woman in a black skirt with white polka dots sits with her legs crossed against a dark background. A small red bow with white dots, drawn with clean solid outlines and flat fill, sits on the outer upper thigh. The red of the bow and the red shoes are the main colour accents against the black and skin tones.

The galley of the Mary Ellen was no bigger than a wardrobe, and Ada Pell kept her knives on a rack above the stove and a length of red ribbon, spotted white, folded in the flour tin. Nobody aboard asked about the ribbon. They ate what she cooked and kept their boots off the step.

The February trip out of Lowestoft went bad on the third night. The wind came round to the south-west, green water came over the rail, and the cabin lamp swung on its chain until the oil slopped. Davy Rowe, who had shipped for his first season and cried into his oilskins, came down the ladder white as paper and asked her what they did when the sea wanted them.
Ada didn't answer him. She trimmed a fresh wick, took the ribbon from the tin, and tied a bow on the hook where the lamp chain met the beam, pulling each loop even with her thumbs the way her mother had taught her at the counter on London Road. "The sea is vain," she said. "My mother always said it likes a thing to look at. Give it something pretty to mind and it forgets the men." Davy laughed despite himself, and the laugh steadied them both.
They came in on the Tuesday with the nets half full and the lamp still burning. Davy asked for the ribbon back, and she gave him a plain brown one from the bottom of the tin, which he tied to his cap. The red bow stayed on the hook for the next voyage and the one after, and the Mary Ellen never lost a man, though the harbour said the cook had struck a bargain with the water and that it had never once been broken.
