Red ray gun with outlined hearts

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A red ray gun with a heart on its side panel, banded in orange, teal and gold, points towards three red outlined hearts trailed by dashed motion lines. The bold black outlines and flat fills are typical of traditional tattooing, with a small shading area on the handle. Colour is used throughout, with the pistol body in red against a pale background and a partial tattoo visible at the left edge.

I had said that, once, over the wall, to a woman who sold honey at the Wells market and had asked what I did all day. I had not expected her to remember, or to act on it.

I spent the Compline bell taking the thing apart on the workbench under the lamp. The trigger spring was sound. The little bulb in the muzzle still had its wire. Brother Gerard came in to say the abbot wanted the sacristy swept, and found me with a jeweller's screwdriver in one hand and a space pistol in the other. He laughed until he had to sit down on the coal scuttle.

On the feast of Saint Brigid I went down to the gate with the thing rewired and fired it once at the gravel. Three paper hearts I had cut from an old hymn book fluttered out on a thread of dashed red ink. Rosalind was waiting on the far side of the wall, and she pretended she had not seen. Some things, I have decided, are worth a small vanity. I lowered the gun, and the wall between us seemed a good deal lower than it had been.
