Revolver tattoo on the side ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a six-shot revolver with a long barrel and dark wooden grip, shown in profile facing left. The cylinder, frame and hammer are rendered with grey shading and fine lines to suggest metal and highlights. The design sits alone on the skin against a plain background of a dark top and a pale arm.

Mr Abel Crane set his revolver on the piano lid between a tumbler of rye and my sheet music, the way another man might set down his hat. The barrel pointed at the window and the wooden grip faced me. He said he would be obliged if I played something slow, since he was feeling sentimental and did not care to be shot while he felt it.

I had played for the Silver Spur for eleven years and knew the sound a room makes when it stops breathing. Forty men went quiet at once. The cylinder had six chambers, and I counted them without meaning to, the way you count stairs in the dark. Five held brass. He had loaded it himself, he said, leaving the sixth empty, so that any man in the room could take a turn and learn how lucky he was.
I played a tune called Along the Platte anyway, because my hands knew it better than my nerves did. Crane tapped the grip in time with the melody. Halfway through the second chorus the door banged open and Sheriff Dunmore came in shaking snow from his hat, and the gun was gone from the piano before the bellows had stopped.
Crane never told me what he owed the sheriff. But the following Saturday a parcel arrived at the hall addressed to the pianist, and inside lay a single brass cartridge, polished bright, with no powder in it at all. I keep it on the keys where the sheet music used to sit, and I still play the slow ones.
