Red rose in a heart-shaped vine
Botanical · Mixed · Photo
A red rose with shaded petals sits at the top of a heart-shaped vine made of green stems and leaves. The black outlines are bold and the leaves have darker green shading and highlights. Red and green ink dominate the composition against a plain, pale skin background.

You are halfway up the broken curtain wall when the rope gives, and the only thing within reach is the ivy, so you take hold of it. Below, the moat is a green square of duckweed. Your sister is shouting your name from the gatehouse, but her voice is thin up here, the way everything is thin at the top of Carrow Keep.

The stems in your fists are older than the wall. The caretaker told you that the morning you signed on to clear the bailey: some steward trained them into a heart in the reign of the third Edward, and the shape has survived two sieges and a fire. Where the vine curls back on itself, a single rose has opened, dark red at the edges, its petals gone soft as velvet. Nobody has pruned it in forty years because nobody has been able to reach it.
You get your boot onto a corbel and work your knife under the stem. The rose comes free into your palm, heavy with rainwater, and tucked behind its head is a copper ring gone green, with a name scratched inside too worn to read. You turn it over twice. Far below, your rope lies in the duckweed like a dropped thread, and your sister has stopped shouting.
You climb down slowly, the ring on your little finger and the rose pinned between your teeth. At the foot of the wall you feed the cut stem back through the gap in the masonry where the heart was meant to close. It doesn't close. It never did. Behind you the breach breathes out cold air, and the vine, bleeding sap, loops around nothing at all.
