Red rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large, fully opened red rose is tattooed on the forearm, shown from a slightly angled view. The petals are rendered with smooth, realistic shading in deep reds, with pink highlights on the inner curls and darker maroon in the shadows. The rose fills the centre of the frame against a plain skin tone and a dark, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule had gone lame at the second hairpin, so I carried the cutting myself, the last six miles up the Col de Vaudrey with the bundle buttoned inside my coat against my ribs. It was wrapped in wet moss and oilcloth, and every time I stopped to breathe the cold got through to it. Old Ferrand had made me promise. The rose was the only one left from his mother's wall in Sallanches, a deep red thing that opened slowly, like a fist unclenching, and he had not wanted it to die in a town where nobody remembered the wall.

Halfway up, sleet came sideways off the scree and I lost the path twice. I kept my eyes on the cairns, counting them the way Ferrand had taught me, forty-one to the summit. At the thirty-third the wind dropped and there was a clearing of pale light, and I unbuttoned the coat to check the wrapping. Inside the oilcloth the bud had split a thin seam of colour, the red at its edge gone nearly black where the cold had pressed it, and a curl of pink showing at the heart like the inside of a shell.

I did not reach the summit before dark. I dug a hollow under a boulder, packed the cutting against my chest, and slept with my hand over the coat. When I came down the far side in the morning, the valley was full of meltwater and the first bees were already out over the gorse, and at the chapel above Bessans I pressed the cutting into wet earth beside the wall. It is still there. Ferrand's grandson sends me photographs every June, and the bloom gets larger each year, the petals folding back on themselves as if they had somewhere else to be.
