Red rose watercolour tattoo on the upper chest
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A large red rose in full bloom forms the centre of the design, with its petals shaded in deep reds and lighter highlights. Loose yellow, teal and black ink splashes and drips spread around the flower, giving a painterly watercolour effect. The tattoo sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, with the neck and shoulder visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Hal, I know the reunion is not until the autumn, but Mrs Pryce's old art room comes down on Thursday, and the man with the skip has promised to take everything that is not nailed to the floor. So last night I let myself in through the fire door with a torch in my teeth and a tin of red emulsion from the caretaker's cupboard, and I painted the rose you drew on the back of my maths book in 1994, the one that got us both a detention.

I did not mean it to come out as a rose at first. I was only flicking the brush at the wall the way you used to flick ink at the window to watch it run. The yellow came from the leak above the sinks, which has been dripping onto the same tile since we were fourteen. The teal I scraped from the bottom of an old poster tin, and the black was the last of the drawing ink Mr Bell kept locked in his drawer. The petals went on in six goes, because every time I stepped back the thing looked more like a bruise than a flower, until it looked like you.
Dennis found me sitting on a radiator at eleven. He did not tell me off. He took his phone out, photographed it from three angles, and said it was the first thing in that room that had ever been worth the heating bill. Then he asked whether the rose was meant for the reunion or for the skip, and I told him I did not know yet.
Come on Saturday. Bring the maths book if you still have it. The rose is between the second and third sinks, and by then the rain will have had a go at it, which is the only way it was ever going to look right. Love, Ros.
