Red rose with monarch wing petals on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A large red rose sits centrally on the upper back, with its outer petals replaced by black wings patterned with white dots and orange panels. The red petals are shaded with smooth gradients and highlights, and small water droplets sit on the petal edges. Dark blue and teal shading behind the rose gives it depth against the skin.

Come closer, the fire is low and I will not shout this twice. In the mountain kingdom of Hesk, where the roads froze before the harvest was in, there was a rose garden kept by a widower named Anselm Varro. He grew only the deep red kind, the colour of a fresh wound on a winter sill, and he would not let a single bloom go to the market. The people of the valley thought him mad. What sort of man keeps flowers for no one?

Then one June a woman came up the pass with a torn map and a cage of monarch butterflies she had carried from the lowland meadows. She had lost her way, her horse, and most of her coin. Anselm gave her bread and a cot in the potting shed. In the morning she opened the cage, and the monarchs did not fly away. They settled on the roses, folding their black wings with the white freckles over the red petals, and when the morning dew came off the leaves, they drank it from the petal edges until each rose wore small bright beads like a row of pearls.
Anselm wept, which the valley never believed. He had always thought the roses were beautiful and cold. Now they looked like something that had decided to stay.
The woman stayed through the autumn. When she left in spring, the butterflies went with her, and Anselm's roses kept their wings. To this day, if you climb to Hesk in the early light and look at the garden wall, you will see the flowers still wearing those dark wings, and you will understand that some things are only kept when they are given away.
