Red rose with water droplets
Realism · Colour · Photo
A full-bloom red rose fills the frame, with its outer petals curling open and its centre tightly wound. Soft gradients of crimson, maroon and near-black create the shading, and small glossy droplets sit on several petals. The rose is centred on a pale, lightly toned background of skin.

Her husband Angus had brought the cutting back from Oban the year they married, wrapped in wet newspaper inside his coat. It refused to flower for thirty years. The men of Scarra laughed at it and said salt air made a rose sulk. Then the spring the Kittiwake went down off the Dhu Stacks, the rose opened all at once, full and dark red, its outer petals curling back as if it had been holding its breath.

She set the spade aside and simply sat with her hands in her lap while the rain gathered on the petals and ran down into the tight middle of the bloom.
Each morning since, there have been droplets on the petals, one for every boat still tied at the slip. She counts them before she puts the kettle on. Some mornings the number goes up. This morning there were seven, and she let herself say it aloud to the wall.
