Red roses tattoo on the hip
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large red roses and a smaller rose bud, with dark green leaves and stems spreading across the skin. The petals are outlined in dark ink and shaded in deeper reds, with bold, solid colour and little fine detail. The close crop shows the tattoo across the hip and lower abdomen, with a navel piercing and the top edge of dark lace underwear in frame.

The man at the hut says the snow will hold the road closed until the middle of June, so I have a fortnight of waiting ahead. I have been mending the stone wall behind the shelter, which is a pointless thing to do in a place with no sheep, but my hands like having something to lift. Every stone I set, I think of Grandad's knuckles going white on the trowel, and I swear the lichen on the top courses is the same greeny grey as his old jumper.
There is a girl from the survey crew who sketches on the back of her maps. Yesterday she drew a rose on the edge of my notebook without asking, two big blown ones and a bud tucked under, and she said it was for luck on the north side. I told her roses don't grow above the tree line. She said that was exactly why it needed luck.
I've kept the drawing. I'll bring it down when the road opens, and we'll put it in the blue jug together, even if it's only paper.
