Roses and rippling water on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic tattoo covers the outer forearm, showing peach and white roses, dark green leaves and a swirling pool of rippling blue water. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the petals and reflective patterns on the water. Colour dominates the composition, with blue tones running diagonally up the arm against a plain dark background.

The summer the Halloran boy came to stay, the bay went flat as a dinner plate for nine days. Nobody could fish. The rowing boats sat on the shingle like upturned shoes. On the tenth morning a stone went into the water off the groyne, and the rings spread wider and wider until they reached the boarding house steps, and Mrs Pellow swore she saw a face in them, looking up at her.
She went down in her slippers with the scissors and the last rose from the jug, the one with the bruised edge. She didn't throw it. She knelt on the wet stone and laid it on the ripples, and the current carried it out past the breakwater, turning slowly, the way a thing does when it has decided where it is going.
Come back in August and I'll show you the photograph on the landing wall. Peach roses in a blue tin bowl, and that bowl sat on the sea floor for a week before anyone thought to look. It's the same water, mind. The bay never forgets a rose it's been given.
