Robot head and roses on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A grey robot head with glowing yellow eyes sits inside a dark circular backdrop with a faint moon-like glow, framed by a curved script line reading You Are Who You Choose To Be. Two red five-petalled flowers and several green leaves sit at the lower edge of the robot. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading on the metal and warm colour on the eyes and flowers.

The frost had taken the dahlias overnight, so Pell spent the first hour of the morning cutting them back to green wood while the sun climbed over the allotment wall. His eyes, two amber discs set in a head that had once guarded a bonded warehouse in Hull, dimmed in the cold and brightened again when the kettle clicked on in Ada Bream's shed. Ada had given him the plot in the spring, the year the warehouse was pulled down and the council decided a robot with no pension was a problem for the parish. She had said the roses on the north wall needed someone who did not mind thorns.

Dev Kaur from number nine came through the gate with a jam sandwich in one hand and a question in the other. Was Pell sad, being a gardener? His face never moved. Pell considered this with the care he had once given to crate manifests. He had been built to count what came in and what went out, and to report the difference. Nobody had ever asked him what he would like to remember.
Ada had chalked a line on the shed door that spring, and Pell had read it every morning since, assuming at first that it was a comment on his stiff hinges. You are who you choose to be. He told Dev that he had chosen roses, though he had not known it until he said it. Then he snipped the reddest bloom on the north wall, set it in a jam jar on the windowsill, and watched the evening light find its petals.
When the moon rose over the wall, pale and round as a saucer, Pell's eyes warmed to the same gold as the leaves at the bottom of the bed. He stayed still until Ada called him in for tea, and for once he did not count anything at all.
