Colour tattoo of Hello Kitty styled as R2-D2 with a red bow and a small blue hologram figure, on the thigh.

Hello Kitty as R2-D2 on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Hello Kitty redrawn as a robot in the style of R2-D2, with a grey and blue body, a blue dome shaped head with a black central lens, and a large red bow. A small blue figure appears in a hologram projection above the head. Bold black outlines and soft blue shading give the projection a translucent look, and the design sits centred on the thigh against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The signal cabin at Wenlow Halt had a round tin robot in the corner, grey and blue, with a black glass eye and a red ribbon bow tied to its dome by someone long gone. Nell Garrow kept the lamps trimmed and the tickets in their drawers, and the robot kept the timetable in its head, chirping it out whenever the night mail came round the bend early. The porters called it the Cat. Nell called it nothing at all, because she had stopped speaking to machines the winter her brother went off to the mines.

In March a letter came addressed to the cabin, not to her, in a hand she knew. Her brother, Tom, had written from the far end of the line. The envelope had no stamp, only a smudge of oil. She read it twice, then sat with it on the sill while the robot's eye turned slowly toward her and the lamp hissed. When she said his name, the robot lifted its head, and from the top of its dome a thin blue light climbed into the air and unfolded into a small figure in a long coat, no taller than a thumb, who waved at her with both hands.

The figure was Tom at nine years old, not grown, not drowned, just the boy who had once hidden in the coal store. He opened his mouth and the words came out of the robot's speaker in his voice. The mine had not taken him. He had gone west for work and forgotten to come back, and he was sorry. Nell did not cry. She tied the red bow tighter on the robot's head and asked it to carry an answer down the line.

The next morning the Cat rolled onto the 6:14 with a sealed reply in its hatch, and Nell stood on the platform waving until the train was a dot. The ribbon had come loose in the wind, and it lay on the cinders where she left it, a small red knot the porters stepped around for a week.
