Finn and Jake riding with a banner on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
Finn the human rides on Jake the dog, raising a sword high in one hand and holding a round shield in the other. A red banner beneath them reads MATHEMATICAL in capital letters. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated fills of orange, blue, yellow and pale green give the piece a cartoon look, with the figures centred on the thigh.

Sit closer to the grate, the lot of you, and mind the snow melting off the lintel onto your necks. The pass is shut until spring, so you'll hear the whole of it tonight. This is the tale of Pell Harrow, who was twelve and carried a sword longer than his arm, and of Mott, the dog he won at cards off a drover at Gullet Bridge. Mott was not a dog like other dogs. When he was frightened he stretched like warm dough, and when he was pleased he swelled to the size of a cart wheel.

The trouble came over the ridge on a February morning, when the wolves of the high meadows went hungry and walked down towards the mill. Pell raised his sword as high as his arm would reach and shouted that they would not have the mill. Mott climbed under him, grew to the size of a hay wagon, and let the boy ride him down the slope with a round oak shield on his other arm. Rooks scattered from the elms. The wolves sat down in the snow, very puzzled, and the grey leader asked the boy what he thought he was doing.
Pell told them, with great seriousness, that the mill wheel turned by a sum only he understood, and that if one wolf stepped past the millrace the whole valley would lose its flour. The old grey bitch with one ear said she had never heard of such a sum. So Pell wrote it in the snow with the point of his sword, in tall capitals, and read it aloud: MATHEMATICAL. The wolves studied the word for a long time. Then they went home, because nobody wants to argue with a sum they cannot read.
Mott still carries a scar from that morning along his flank, and he is very proud of it. Now go to sleep, the lot of you. The snow will be gone by the time the pass opens, and the sum will still be right.
