UFO, crescent moon and pines with Never Alone
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
An oval scene shows a flying saucer with a single eye and a yellow tractor beam descending over dark pine trees, beneath a black night sky dotted with white stars and a yellow crescent moon. The black outlines, solid black sky and grey shaded hills are bold and clean, with the yellow used as the main colour accent. The words NEVER ALONE in black capitals run down the right side of the oval, and the tattoo sits on an arm against a blurred background.

The reunion was held in the back room of the Crown and Anchor, under a paper banner that someone had spelled wrong. Maggie Pell counted eleven faces she half remembered and one she could not place at all, a man at the end of the bar with a tattooed forearm resting on a beer mat. He kept glancing at the window, where the car park lights gave way to a black line of pines beyond the sports field.

She went over with two glasses of cider and set one down in front of him without asking. He looked at it, then at her. "You were in Miss Haddow's class," she said. "The year the bus broke down on the Dunning road and we had to walk back in the dark."
"We saw the light that night," he said, and turned his arm so she could see the oval on it, the saucer with its one unblinking eye, the yellow beam that came down over the trees like a dropped rope. "You said it was a farm truck. Everybody said that. Then the bus came and we all got on, and nobody said anything else about it, and I've been wondering for twenty years whether the thing was looking for us or just passing through."
Maggie thought of the forty minutes they had lost, the way the teacher had counted heads again and again until the number came right. She drank her cider. Out past the glass the pines stood very still, and somewhere over them a small yellow moon hung where it had always hung.
"Well," she said at last, "it must have found what it wanted." He laughed, and the room got louder around them, and neither of them looked at the window again.
