Dougal had promised his granddaughter he would keep the speech under three minutes, and at the reception in the converted barn he was already at two and a half, standing by the trestle table tapping a fork against his glass. Beyond the open doors the sky over the car park had gone the deep blue of a school atlas, and half the guests were pretending not to look at it.

"Sixty years ago I built a rocket out of a tin of peas and a bicycle lamp," he said, and the room laughed the way rooms do when they have heard a story before. Mara, the bride, was not laughing. She was watching the triangle of light the lamp threw onto the ceiling, the same shape her grandfather had sketched on the back of the seating plan that morning, with a little moon in one corner and a row of dots running down the middle like a launch sequence.
He had never got anywhere near the moon himself. Dougal had spent forty years as a draughtsman at a works outside Stevenage, drawing bolts for other people's rockets, and the tin-and-lamp one had never left his kitchen table. From his jacket he took a sheet of tracing paper, creased soft as cloth, and unfolded it across the cake table between the cutlery and the jam tarts. The rocket was there, its fins spaced with pencilled circles, and beneath it a single eye drawn inside a triangle, which he said was for watching things when you could not go yourself.
"Go on, then," he said, and Mara's uncle reached for the lamp switch. The room went dark, the paper glowed faintly where the moonlight caught it, and for a moment nobody spoke. Dougal did not add another word, which was the first time all afternoon he had kept to the time.
