Planet in a triangle on a calf

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A planet with a shaded surface sits inside a large upright triangle, with small stars scattered around it and a thin circle with a dot above the apex. Fine dotwork stippling builds the shading on the planet and the triangle, and dotted guide lines extend from the base and the circles. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on a lower leg against a tiled floor.

You are up before the milk lorry, your breath standing in front of you as you cross the yard with a torch that has gone yellow. Frost has made the gate ring like a bell when you touch it. Behind the barn the field runs flat to the hedge, and the sky above it still holds its last stars, sharp as pinpricks in black card.

Your grandmother kept a worn almanac in the tack room, its pages soft from her thumbs. She taught you that planets do not twinkle the way stars do. They hold steady, and you have to trust them to be where the almanac says. She drew triangles in the margins of the feed book, one point up, a dot set inside each, and never explained them. You assumed they were sums.

This morning the ewe in the top pen lambed in the night, a single, and she is licking it clean under the heat lamp. You kneel in straw that smells of iron and wet wool and count the breaths. One. Two. The lamb shakes its head and sneezes, and you laugh out loud at nothing, and the sound climbs into the cold like a spark.

When you step back into the yard the sky has paled at the edge. Venus hangs low over the silo, not blinking, exactly where the almanac said it would be. You take the pencil from behind your ear, press one small dot onto the back of your hand, and go to fetch the hay.
