Bird perched on a geometric icosahedron on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small songbird in fine engraved-style linework perches on top of a geometric icosahedron drawn in black outline with red dashed inner lines. The bird's belly is filled with solid teal, with red touches at its feet and on a vertical dashed line above it. The design sits on a pale, softly lit forearm against a white background.

Dear Marta,

The customs hut at Lindqvist Bridge has a new tenant, and I have decided she is a bird. She came in under the shutter on Tuesday, a small brown thing with a teal patch on her breast as if someone had dabbed her with paint, and she has not left since. The sergeant wants her out. I have been feeding her crumbs from my lunch and calling it paperwork.

The bird has taken a liking to the dice. Last month a surveyor left a twenty-sided die on my desk, the kind you roll for games, though it was more a skeleton of triangles with hollow faces. Whenever the wind rattles the door, she hops onto it and rides it across the blotter, pausing at each corner as if checking the edges. The red chalk lines the surveyor drew on the frontier map look just like the dashed threads running through the die, and I am certain she can tell where the true border falls.

Yesterday a man with a suitcase of copper wire asked me to stamp his papers. I said I could not until the bird had finished. He laughed, then saw her sitting there, thinking, and went quiet. She flicked her tail, lifted off the die and flew straight out of the open window, over the river where the two flags stand on opposite banks. Nobody stopped her. I did not stamp his papers either. I think they can wait an afternoon.

Write back and tell me whether you still believe the birds know more than we do.

Love, Ilse
