Moon over mountain lake on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A full moon with shaded craters sits in the upper right of a diamond-shaped frame. The lower part shows snow-capped mountains reflected in a still lake, with pine tree silhouettes along both edges. The sky is built from stippled dots, while the moon and landscape use smooth shading and fine linework.

Dear Ada,

The chain went under the water at noon and came up with mud on it, so Mr Pell has decided the lake is shallower than the sheet says, and I have been sent to the far shore to argue with the pines. You would laugh. Every tree on this side leans the same way, as if they all heard the same bad news.
Last night the moon came up over the ridge before the sun was properly gone, and it sat in the notch between the two peaks like a coin someone had dropped in a cup. I took the drawing board to the boat and tried to sketch it, but the paper filled with dots instead. I had been pricking the sky with the point of my pen for an hour before I realised I was copying the rain we had all day, the fine kind that does not fall so much as hang about.
Pell says the moon is only a mirror for the sun, and that a surveyor should trust the theodolite and not his eyes. Perhaps. But when I rowed back the lake held the whole range upside down, snow and pines and that white disc, and for a minute I could not tell which picture was the true one. I kept my oars still and let the boat drift until the cold came through my boots.
I am sending this with the post cart tomorrow, along with the sketch, which I have tucked into the envelope so that you can judge for yourself. Tell Father the bearing on the north cairn is correct. Tell him I am sleeping well.
Yours in haste and in the rain, Tom
