The roses along our back wall had been Aunt Maud's pride for forty years, so when blackspot got into them that June she took it personally. She marched out with a bucket of soapy water, a pair of secateurs and the rolling pin from the dresser, which she said was the only thing in the house heavy enough to make a point.

I was nine and sent to hold the bucket. We spent a week on our knees pulling leaves that had gone freckled and ugly. Every evening she came in with flour on her cardigan, because she had decided the cure was to bake. "Roses don't mind a bit of fuss," she said, cracking eggs into a bowl and beating them with the old whisk until my arm ached from watching. The kitchen smelled of scorched sugar and wet soil.

On the Sunday she made a lemon sponge and carried it out to the bench, and Mr Pryce from over the wall came round to ask what all the fuss was. He had not spoken to us since the hedge business. She cut him a slice without asking. By the time he had finished it, he was on his knees beside us with his own bucket.

The roses came back by August, glossy and stubborn. Aunt Maud had a board painted for the back door with happiness is homemade in curling capitals, and she never once admitted the cake had done anything. She just kept the rolling pin hanging on the wall where everyone could see it.
