Hester Wane kept the orchard at Lower Coddle, and she kept its hours too. Twelve notches were cut into the bark of the old pear at the centre, one for each hour, and when a ripe fruit let go of its stalk it fell on whichever notch the day had reached. Nobody in the valley owned a clock. They walked up the lane at the drop of a pear and went home again at the next.

One August a stranger came up from the coast asking the way to the sea. He sat under the pear to eat a plum, and he watched the fallen fruit with a frown. The seven was wrong, he said, sitting where the eleven should be. Hester said the pear had never been wrong. Only the people who walked beneath it, who came late to the gate and blamed the tree for it.

He stayed three nights in her barn and was courteous about it. On the fourth morning she woke to the sound of a knife on bark and went out to find him carving, very neatly, new numbers over the old ones, moving the twelve so that noon fell where his own shadow fell. He smiled and said it would save everyone the bother. She let him finish. Then she went to the lower gate and waited, as she always did, for the first pear to fall.

It fell at a quarter past six, on no notch at all, bounced once off his new carving and rolled into the ditch. The stranger was still hunting for it when the milk cart came up the lane, a whole hour late, and the carter asked him what time he made it.
