Roman numeral date tattoos on two fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, each showing a single line of black Roman numeral lettering along a finger, reading XIV·II·MMXII with interpuncts between the groups. The lettering is thin, even and crisp, with clean serifs and steady linework on the skin. The photo is taken close up on a light surface, with a silver ring and a beaded bracelet visible on the upper hand.

"Cap height first," she said, crouching beside him. "Roman numerals forgive nothing. An I that leans looks like it's been at the sherry."

He wanted to know why the cinema needed a date on its board at all, when everyone on Ashby Road knew it had opened in 1931. Nell didn't answer straight away. She fetched the wooden stencil from the cupboard under the box office, the one with the nicks along one edge, and held it up to the streetlamp. On its back, in carpenter's pencil, was a date she had never forgotten: the fourteenth of February 2012, the night the power failed halfway through the second reel and Malik the projectionist walked the aisles with a torch, asking everyone to stay put. Ninety people stayed. Two of them were Maisie Doyle and Tom Okafor, who had been arguing about a coat, and who were married in that same foyer four years later with the sign still hanging above them.
Dev read the pencil date twice, then counted the letters on his fingers, which made Nell laugh out loud for the first time that week.
"Right," she said, holding out the brush. "You do the second MM. I'll stand here and pretend I'm not watching."
