Small rabbit face on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small cartoon rabbit face is drawn in thin black linework on the side of a finger, with two long ears angled upwards, a rounded nose and whiskers. The design is simple and uses no shading, and the ink appears crisp against the skin. The finger is shown against dark blue denim, with the other hand resting below it and pale pink nail polish visible.

The rabbit lived on the side of Mrs Okonedo's index finger, which was a poor address for a rabbit but the only one she could afford. Every morning she tapped the finger against the kettle and the rabbit twitched its whiskers at the steam, which was the closest thing to conversation the two of them managed before nine.

The trouble started at the bus stop on Harrow Road, where a boy from the flats upstairs bet her a pound she couldn't make the rabbit do a trick. She said rabbits did not take orders. He said everything took orders if you asked it right. So she held the finger up against the grey sky and wiggled it, and the ears, which were only two thin lines, flicked forward as if somebody had heard their name called from across a playground.
She gave him the pound back afterwards, because it had been a fair bet and the rabbit had clearly enjoyed itself. The boy lost interest in the whole business by the time the number 18 pulled in, but Mrs Okonedo kept thinking about it on the stairs, counting the floors on the way up with one finger held carefully in front of her, its ears just catching the light from the landing window.
By the Tuesday the rabbit was giving her directions to the chemist and telling her when the milk had gone off, and she had stopped pretending she didn't hear it.
