Rosary anklet tattoo with cross
Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A two-panel photograph of a tattoo on the ankle and foot, showing a double strand of blue beads with a single green bead, a medal with a raised cross, and a dark hanging cross at the end. The beads and medal are shaded to look three-dimensional, and the linework is clean and well defined. The left panel shows the full ankle and foot, while the right panel is a close view of the beads wrapping around the ankle.

The band had started the moon-over-the-pier tune again, and Ruth Farrant still hadn't come back for her coat. I took it from the hook myself and found the rosary in the lining pocket: two loops of blue glass beads with a single green bead near the middle, the kind my mother bought from the stall outside St Anne's on feast days. The medal had a cross raised on its face, and the little dark cross hung from the end like a full stop.

Ruth had danced every Saturday since the spring in the same green shoes, always with a sailor from the Trinity House boat who called her Miss Farrant as if it were a joke between them. She wore the chain for luck, she said, and had never once explained the luck. I had thought it was a bracelet until the night the cloakroom light caught it and I saw how it was fastened, looped and tucked and kept out of sight beneath the hem of her stocking.
I pushed through the couples to the edge of the floor and watched her turn. The beads swung and flashed under the glitter ball each time she came round, the green one always the last to catch the light. When the number ended she saw me holding the coat and laughed, a short bright sound, and came over with her cheeks pink from the heat.
"Keep it safe for me till Monday," she said, and then, quieter, "Count them if you can't sleep. My mother said there are fifty-nine, and the green one is for whoever comes home."
I put the loop in my cardigan pocket and felt the beads knock against my hip all the way through the next waltz. I didn't count them. I just kept my hand over the pocket and let the band play on.
