Chain bracelet tattoo with script charms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo imitates two layered chain bracelets with small round beads and pale blue gemstones, with two script letter charms hanging from the lower chain. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading giving the chain links some depth. The blue stones are the only colour, set against black and grey ink on light skin, and the design wraps around the wrist in a close-up shot against a patterned dark fabric.

Rain drummed on the awning at Harrowgate Lane market, and I had been working the same knot since eight o'clock. Two chains had come in a biscuit tin, tangled together as if they'd been sleeping in the same drawer for years. Small black beads ran along both, with pale blue stones set between them, the colour of skimmed milk held up to a lamp.

Mrs Ferriby came back at half past eleven, shaking water off her hood. "Can you separate them?" she asked. I said I could, for a fair price, and she said the price was fine, she only wanted the letters kept on the lower chain. Two script charms hung there, an S and a looping L, thin as pen strokes and tarnished in the curls where somebody's thumb had rubbed them for a long time.

I worked the clasp loose with a bent pin while she told me the pair had come from a seafront stall in Brighton, the kind that always smelled of frying dough. Her sister had bought them on a wet afternoon and never once taken them off, not even to sleep, she said, though she'd been told that was bad for the metal. The last link gave with a small click, and I felt absurdly proud of it, as if I'd done something useful for the world.

I handed the chains back separated, the lower one still carrying its two letters. She held it up to the grey light and the stones caught it, bright as a torch seen through fog. She slipped it into her coat pocket without fastening it. Outside, the rain kept washing the bunting until the blue of the stalls ran into the gutters, and the only thing left shining was the L, swinging slightly as she walked away.
