Realistic rosary tattoo with red beads, a shaded grey cross and a medallion wrapping around a person's ankle and foot.

Rosary tattoo around an ankle

Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A rosary runs in a loop around the ankle and down the top of the foot, ending in a grey cross with shading that gives it a raised, metallic look. The rosary beads are rendered in red and pink with highlights, and a small oval medallion sits along the chain. The photo is taken indoors on a tiled floor, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

Red ones, dozens, bouncing off the boards like hail on a shed roof. Nobody stopped dancing. Mrs Ferriter swung past in her green taffeta with her eyes shut, and I stood there with my hand still open, holding nothing, while the couples jostled round my shoes.

Teddy Sallis was the one who came over. He had asked me for the foxtrot twice that evening and I had said no twice, which I suppose was why he came over now, on his knees, picking beads out from under the piano while the band played on. He found the little oval medallion last, wedged against the skirting board, its tiny raised hands worn smooth from years of my grandmother's thumb. He turned it over in his palm for a long moment before he gave it back.

'The cross is still on the end,' he said. 'I've got that too.'

We never did get all forty back. I threaded what I had onto my grandmother's old garter ribbon and wore it round my ankle under my stocking, because it was the only thing she ever left me that didn't pinch. Some nights when I walk home I still feel the cross knock against my heel, one bead short, counting out the miles.
