Rosary and cross anklet tattoo
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on a tiled floor, with a rosary tattoo wrapping twice around the ankle. The cross pendant hangs down onto the top of the foot, and the beads and pendant are shaded to show depth and highlights. The image is in black ink and greys, and the foot fills most of the frame against the pale floor.

The rain had come sideways off the Eden since seven, and Dilys Pring had sold nothing but a bootlace and a bag of conkers by half past nine. She was tipping loose jet beads back into their tins when a lad in a wet parka asked whether she had anything black, plain and heavy enough to stop a man's pockets flapping.

She had one string left, strung on waxed cord gone soft in the damp. Its cross was pewter, worn smooth along the arms where her late husband Alf used to rub it while he waited for the bus. The lad turned it over under the striplight and said it looked like something a nan would own. Dilys told him that was the point. Nans were the only people who ever really counted anything.
He paid in coins he checked twice, then asked how many beads there were. She had never once counted them. Alf had always said it was bad luck to know, the way it was bad luck to say how many fish you had caught before you had landed them. So she stood in the rain and ran the string through her fingers while the lad waited, and she counted out loud, and she got to fifty-three and lost her place.
He laughed, not unkindly, and said he would take his chances. When he had gone she sat on her upturned crate and finished the count properly, bead by bead, until the last of the rain thinned to nothing. Fifty-nine, as the tin said. She put the rest of the beads back in their tins and left the empty hook swinging under the awning for whoever came next.
